The Nest

At our school, we recognise that every child is unique and that children learn and develop in different ways and at different rates. Our Specialist Resource Provision (SRP) provides a nurturing, inclusive and highly personalised environment where children can feel safe, successful and ready to learn. Our aim is to ensure that every child is able to access a curriculum that is ambitious, meaningful and appropriate to their individual stage of development.
A Curriculum Built Around the Child
Children within our SRP who are working academically in line with their chronological age will access a broad and balanced National Curriculum, linked closely to the learning taking place within their mainstream class. Appropriate adaptations and specialist support will be provided to ensure that they can participate successfully and make progress.
For children who are currently working below the academic expectations for their chronological age, we provide a bespoke, developmentally sensitive curriculum. Rather than focusing solely on a child’s age, we consider their individual stage of development, communication, engagement, sensory needs, independence and readiness to learn.
Our curriculum is organised into three flexible pathways:
Hatchling → Nestling → Fledgling
These pathways enable us to provide the right level of challenge and support for each child. They are not fixed labels, and children may access elements from different pathways according to their individual strengths, needs and next steps.
The learning
Opened in September 2026, The Nest is Lansdowne Primary School’s Specialist Resource Provision, funded by Kent County Council to provide 20 specialist places for children with EHCPs.
Our SRP curriculum recognises that successful learning is about much more than academic achievement.
Communication, emotional wellbeing, sensory regulation, relationships, independence and confidence are fundamental to a child’s ability to learn and thrive.
For this reason, these areas are embedded throughout all three curriculum pathways rather than being viewed as separate interventions.
Children’s individual targets and priorities also form an important part of their daily provision. Staff work closely with families and other professionals to ensure that learning reflects each child’s individual profile and supports progress towards their longer-term outcomes.
Supporting Every Child to Progress
Our pathways provide a framework for learning, but the child always comes first.
Children are not expected to fit into a curriculum. Instead, we adapt the curriculum to meet the child.
Progress is carefully monitored, and provision is adapted as children’s skills, confidence and independence develop. A child may work predominantly within one pathway while accessing elements of another where this is appropriate.
Ultimately, our SRP aims to provide children with a safe and supportive environment in which they can:
communicate, regulate, connect, explore, learn and become increasingly independent.
Through high expectations, specialist support and carefully personalised learning, we want every child within our SRP to experience success and develop the skills they need for the next stage of their education and beyond.
